Unfortunately, his presentation was not very convincing. “I think US investors are cautious because of the cultural differences,” he said. It seems to me that recent breaches in the supply chain and contamination issues are the real concerns keeping US investors at bay.

With a few slides discussing how China has CGMP facilities and ingredients ready, as well as very cheap labor, the speaker’s urge for US capital (the last thing it needs) came off more as desperation than honest business wooing. He even mentioned that he thinks the overall mentality throughout China needs to change. When it comes to quality and convincing the US market that China’s manufacturing teams and products are safe, quality controlled, and well regulated, I couldn’t agree more.

The awards program, now in its fifth year, recognizes companies that advance pharmaceutical manufacturing technology. INTERPHEX and ISPE are among the sponsors of the awards.

The category winners, as announced in January, for 2009 are:

Aseptic Technologies, located in Gembloux, Belgium, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Equipment Innovation

Centocor Biologics Ireland, located in Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Sustainability

Centocor R&D Schaffhausen, located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Facility Integration

Hameln Pharma, located in Hameln, Germany, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Operational Excellence

Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, located in Aurangabad, India, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Regional Excellence

Roche Pharma Biotech Production Basel, located in Basel, Switzerland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Project Execution

Additionally, GlaxoSmithKline Manufacturing was awarded an Honorable Mention for the company’s project in Verona, Italy.

Among the winners at yesterday’s reception were Thornton Lewis and John Lambe, representing Centocor Biologics, who walked visitors through a short video presentation of the BioCork project, category winner for Facility of the Year Award for Sustainability. The video showed an overview of several of the facility’s internal energy-efficient features as well as external views of the building and the large piece of land on which it sits. Lewis and Lambe explained how the project team worked to minimize the facility’s impact on the local environment by designing a visually appealing skyline and planting 70,000 trees and plants.

The reception took place in aisle 1100 of the show floor, where each winner presented a display of the company’s achievements. Also on display was the award for the overall winner of the Facility of the Year, which will be presented at ISPE’s 2009 Annual Meeting, November 8-11 in San Diego.

More than 10,000 people registered to attend INTERPHEX 2009–taking place this week at New York City’s Javits Center–and even throughout the St. Patty’s Day celebrations, the conference vibe is business, business, business. Perhaps it has something to do with the economy, but as RJ Palermo, industry vice-president of INTERPHEX, points out, if you’re only able to attend one show this year, this is the one to be at.

Not only are there 400 new products on the exhibit floor (with isolator technology, sterile technology, and spectometers stealing the scene), but there are also a higher level of vice-presidents attending this year’s show, says Palermo. Another visible trend–flexibility. Companies are coming out with several products and product lines for multi-purpose facilities, demonstrating the changing nature of the pharmaceutical industry, explains Palermo. And for those in the outsourcing arena, nearly every major contract manufactuer and full-scale service prodvider is here at the Javits Center. “Industry is collaborating much more,” says Palermo and that’s clear throughout the conference.

If you’re interested in the educational sessions, there are three new educational tracks at INTERPHEX this year, including global issues, sustainable practices, and supply-chain security. Check out PharmTech’s live vidcast interviews to hear from some of these speakers.

Today is the first day of the INTERPHEX 2009 conference, so if you couldn’t make it into New York yet, there are still two more days to take advantage of the sessions and networking.
