Pharmaceutical manufacturing has been considered a cost center and easy place to cut costs to improve the bottom line. On the other hand, because of the sizable investments needed for maintaining facilities and processes, the multidisciplinary expertise required to do it right, and the challenges and complexities of consistently manufacturing cGMP - compliant prescription drugs, the book Pharmaplasia proposed that contract manufacturing could represent a yet to be recognized major profit center for Big Pharma. Unfortunately, few Big Pharma executives have any appreciation for pharmaceutical manufacturing complexities, the expertise required has retired or been laid-off, and companies are finding it increasingly difficult to meet even minimum cGMP quality and regulatory requirements.
